Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the Brain

About This Test

A sophisticated diagnostic procedure that uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate highly detailed, cross-sectional images of brain tissue, blood vessels, and structures without using ionizing radiation.

Test Preparation / Instructions

Test Instructions:

  • Metal Screening: Because the scanner uses an ultra-strong magnet, you must fill out a safety checklist and remove all metal objects, including jewelry, watches, hairpins, belts, hearing aids, and removable dental work.

  • Implants: Inform your medical team immediately if you have any implanted medical devices, such as a pacemaker, cochlear implant, aneurysm clips, or shrapnel, as some metals are unsafe in an MRI environment.

  • Claustrophobia: If you experience anxiety in enclosed spaces, let your doctor know ahead of time; mild sedatives can sometimes be prescribed, or an open MRI option discussed.
